What is Legends of Runeterra?

Legends of Runeterra is a digital collectible card game played one versus one. It is based on the world and characters of League of Legends, a popular multiplayer online battle arena game. However, you don't need to be familiar with League of Legends to enjoy Legends of Runeterra, as it has its own lore, mechanics, and style.

A digital collectible card game based on League of Legends

In Legends of Runeterra, you can build your own deck of 40 cards from seven different regions, each with its own theme, playstyle, and champions. Champions are powerful cards that represent the heroes from League of Legends, such as Yasuo, Jinx, Ashe, Garen, and Teemo. Each champion has a unique ability and can level up during the match to become even stronger.

A blend of strategy, skill, and luck

The goal of each match is to reduce your opponent's Nexus health from 20 to zero by playing units, spells, and skills. You need to balance your mana, your hand size, your board presence, and your attack and defense strategies. You also need to anticipate your opponent's moves and react accordingly. Sometimes, you might get lucky with a topdeck or a random effect, but most of the time, your decisions will determine the outcome.

A free-to-play game with a generous reward system

One of the best things about Legends of Runeterra is that it is completely free-to-play. You don't need to spend any money to get cards or unlock features. You can earn cards, shards (in-game currency), and wildcards (cards that can be exchanged for any card of the same rarity) by playing the game and completing quests. You can also choose which region you want to focus on and get rewards specific to that region. You can switch regions at any time without losing progress.

How to play Legends of Runeterra?

If you are new to Legends of Runeterra or card games in general, you might feel overwhelmed by the rules and mechanics. Don't worry, though, as the game has a tutorial mode that will teach you the basics step by step. You can also play against AI opponents or practice with pre-made decks before jumping into online matches.

The basics of the gameplay

Each match consists of several rounds, where both players take turns playing cards from their hand. Each round has two phases: an action phase and a combat phase. During the action phase, players can play units or spells from their hand or use their hero power if they have one. During the combat phase, players can assign their units to attack or block, and resolve the combat damage. Each player has a maximum of 10 mana that can be used to play cards or skills. Some mana can be saved as spell mana, which can only be used for spells. Each player also has a maximum hand size of 10 cards. If they draw more than that, they will discard the excess cards.

A ruthless and warlike empire that seeks to conquer and dominate.

Multi-region cards, landmarks, spellslinging, keywords.

You can mix cards from two different regions to create your deck. You can also include up to six champions in your deck. Each champion has a level up condition that triggers when certain criteria are met. For example, Zed levels up when he attacks twice. When a champion levels up, they gain new or improved abilities and stats. Some champions also have a signature spell that is added to your hand when you play them or when they die. For example, Lux's signature spell is Final Spark, a powerful laser that deals damage to an enemy unit or the enemy Nexus.

The types of cards and spells

There are three types of cards in Legends of Runeterra: units, spells, and landmarks. Units are the main cards that you use to attack or block. They have an attack value (the sword icon), a health value (the heart icon), and sometimes a keyword or an ability. Keywords are special effects that modify how a unit behaves or interacts with other cards. For example, elusive means that a unit can only be blocked by another elusive unit. Abilities are actions or effects that a unit can perform or trigger under certain conditions. For example, rally means that a unit grants you an extra attack token when it is summoned or played.

Spells are cards that have various effects, such as dealing damage, healing, drawing cards, or buffing units. They have a mana cost (the blue circle icon) and a speed (the lightning icon). There are four speeds of spells: slow, fast, burst, and focus. Slow spells can only be played outside of combat and require both players to pass before resolving. Fast spells can be played at any time and can be responded to by other fast or burst spells. Burst spells resolve instantly and do not require a pass from the opponent. Focus spells are similar to burst spells, but they can only be played outside of combat and consume your spell mana.

Landmarks are cards that have persistent effects on the board, but cannot attack or block. They have a mana cost and sometimes a countdown. A countdown is a number that decreases by one at the start of each round. When it reaches zero, the landmark triggers a special effect and is destroyed.

What makes Legends of Runeterra stand out?

Legends of Runeterra is not just another card game. It has some unique features and mechanics that make it different from other games in the genre. Here are some of them:

The responsive and interactive combat system

One of the most distinctive aspects of Legends of Runeterra is the combat system. Unlike other card games, where one player attacks and the other player defends, Legends of Runeterra allows both players to take actions during each round. Each round, one player is designated as the attacker and the other as the defender. The attacker can initiate combat by playing units and assigning them to attack. The defender can then play units and assign them to block. Both players can also play spells or skills before or after combat to influence the outcome.

This means that you always have a chance to react to your opponent's moves and counter them with your own. You also have to thi
